Numbers or Special Abilities?

***WARNING***

Be warned I will make bad jokes. I have a sense of humor and a pretty bad one....so those faint of heart or people with no sense of humor may want to run, although this will have a point and compare both the benefits and problems with special abilities and numbers. Now on to the article!

I can only show you the door. You're the one who has to walk through it.

In a game so reliant on special abilities, why have numbers, except to gain initiative to use your almighty special abilities or use fight-by-the-numbers (fbtn) abilities? Well, let's look at the facts, just the facts, and the beat rolls on.

Follow up:

Special abilities vary, from search for a card, to fbtn, to discard an Evil Character/Hero, to discard all Evil Characters/Heroes, to even negating other special abilities. By contrast, numbers just make it so you are killing the other character and they can unleash their abilities on you. So numbers are bad and evil and will make you lose, right? Nope. True, you can’t build a deck with a bunch of high-numbered cards without at least some artifact support...that would get you beaten pretty quick. But you can’t rely totally on special abilities because then fbtn will beat you down like... a thing... which is... beaten down.

So which do you choose? A mix? Straight special abilities? Or numbers only? Well, I will show the pros and cons of numbers and special abilities, so you can decide for yourself to use numbers, special abilities or a mix of the two!

PURE HIGH NUMBERS

Pros:

  • Few or no Enhancements needed.
  • Usually killing the opposition to start.
  • Due to less Enhancements, more deck space for other cards.
  • Easier to beat fbtn and high-numbered Heroes/Evil Characters
  • Most offenses/defenses will run out of Enhancements to kill you before you run out of Heroes/Evil Characters
  • Doesn’t require special cards for combos.
  • Doesn’t require a complex strategy

Cons:

  • No counters to any Enhancement with a special ability, aside from Artifacts.
  • Impossible to beat immunity without King's Sword
  • Battle winners played by the opposition will always work.

LOW NUMBERS AND SPECIAL ABILITIES

Pros

  • Always have initiative to play your big killers.
  • Able to counter other battle winners.
  • Immunity is easily beat.
  • Massive damage with some battle winners.
  • Weird effects to do whatever you need, be it making your own Evil Character a Hero, or getting an Lost Soul in your opponent's Land of Bondage, or discarding a Site.
  • Many cards can be used to create even more powerful combinations to do more of whatever strategy you are playing.

Cons:

  • Usually requires a somewhat complex strategy.
  • Enhancements needed, which means less room for characters and other cards.
  • Special abilities can counter others. *Such as fight by the numbers*
  • Most special abilities can be negated.

Well, we looked at both of them and know that even pure numbers can work semi-efficiently, although even more so with a little proper special ability support. And now I shall reveal the murderer... it is... choice. Which do you take: the red pill or the blue pill? That is up to you... but remember this: no matter what you choose, whether win or lose, have fun!
